3 DIY Beauty Recipes To Try Over Fall Break
Fall break is the perfect time to relax and treat yourself before finals week falls upon us. So go ahead and get a little messy with these simple DIY beauty recipes.
Honey Mask for Acne and Dark Spots
-
2 tablespoons of honey (preferably raw)
-
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Mix the honey and lemon juice, then apply the mixture to your face and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Add this recipe to your beauty routine and give it a few weeks to see results.
Why it works…
The lemon juice will exfoliate your skin without using abrasive scrubs that can cause irritation. The juice also kills bacteria so it’s great for treating acne. It also acts as a natural lightener so it’ll brighten dark spots and fade scars. Honey, like lemon, is naturally antibacterial so it kills acne-causing bacteria. Honey’s also rich in antioxidants, which protect against cell-destroying free-radicals, thus slowing the signs of aging. It’s also soothing and moisturizing, so it won’t aggravate and inflame your skin.
Teeth Whitener
-
1 teaspoon 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
-
2 teaspoons Baking Soda
Combine to form a paste and apply to tooth brush and brush teeth like normal. Make sure you rinse your mouth well, do this once or twice weekly, depending on necessity and teeth sensitivity. If the hydrogen peroxide bothers you, try using lemon juice instead.
Another alternative: use a bit of hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash before brushing your teeth.
Why it works…
Hydrogen peroxide acts as an antiseptic for minor wounds, but it’s also the main ingredient in many of those pricey whitening strips you find at the store. It’s a lightening aid, so keep it away from any dark fabric, or you run the risk if bleaching them. The baking soda works because it’s abrasive, but it’s so fine that it can polish stains off of teeth, without scratching their enamel.
Deep Conditioner for Damaged Hair
-
2 tablespoons of olive oil
-
half of an avocado
-
2 eggs
Combine ingredients and spread mixture throughout hair (wet or dry), focusing on the most dry or damaged areas. Leave in hair for 5-10 minutes, depending on hair texture. Apply once a week or as needed.
Why it works…
Avocado and eggs are naturally protein rich and, like olive oil, contain fats which makes them moisturizing. Your hair is made up of protein, so coating it with protein will soften and strengthen it. Keep in mind, nothing can “repair” split ends, they simply need to be cut off. The benefit of this mask is that by coating your hair, you temporarily seal some of those dead ends, thus allowing your hair to feel soft and healthy.
