What It's Like To Move Back Home As Told By "Step Brothers"

By Victoria Robertson on May 20, 2015

So college is finally over and we’re moving back home for the summer. While for many this is a much needed break from academic life, for others it poses a major dilemma, as it prevents students from living out their social lives as they do in college.

For those of you that aren’t already aware, here’s a newsflash: living at home is NOTHING like living at college.

So for those of you that are hearing this for the first time, or maybe even for those of you that already know this, but for some reason want to read about it anyway, here is what it’s like to move back home as told by the hilariously funny 2008 comedy, “Step Brothers.”

1. You learn the true definition of freedom.

Freedom means something totally different when you’re at home than it does when you’re at school. You may only be concerned with yourself while at school, but at home, doing what you want when you want to just won’t fly.

2. Sitting around all day and doing absolutely nothing is no longer acceptable.

Yes, the couch and Netflix may be your best friend while you’re at school, but at home, you’ve entered a realm of responsibilities that are actually enforced. You’re expected to do more than binge-watch “The Office” for the fourth time, whether you like it or not.

3. You finally get to eat amazing food.

Food is centerfold in our lives, and living on a limited, college student budget for the past year has made us appreciate good food when we see it. Thank you home cooked meals.

4. You’re expected to have manners while eating that amazing food.

The downside to this fantastic food is that it’s no longer acceptable to complain about things you don’t want or eat like a slob. Sorry, no shoveling at the dinner table.

5. You’re quickly bored.

Coming home gets boring fast, especially if you live far from your friends. We can only take so much HGTV.

6. You find the sudden urge to cure your boredom by rearranging the house.

So what better way to cure your boredom than to completely rearrange your house, starting with your bedroom and continuing until you’ve annoyed your parents.

7. You have a hard time convincing your parents that you’re a different person now.

Our parents still think of us as that 3-year-old that couldn’t pronounce the letter “s,” even if we beg them not to.

8. You inevitably fight with your parents.

Yes, parents and their children fight. It’s human nature.

9. You tend to over-exaggerate during said fights.

It’s in our nature to completely blow these fights out of proportion until we realize how ridiculous we’re being just a little too late.

10. You get stressed out by impending job interviews.

Our parents always implore us to work, and so summer job interviews are a regular part of our routine. But still, they’re stressful.

11. But your parents know just what to say when things get too stressful.

But even when we’re stressed, our parents know exactly how to calm us down and put everything into perspective.

12. You feel obligated to laugh at their stupid jokes.

They aren’t funny. Oh, and we’ve heard them 10 times before. But fine, we’ll laugh. Again.

13. You fight with your siblings.

We always fight with our siblings. That’s just how it works out.

14. Unless they’re being cool.

But on that rare occasion that you and your sibling team up, you could take on the world, if you had the energy or ambition.

15. You hate when your parents choose the music on the radio.

That generational gap is most prevalent when it comes to choosing music, and God do we hate their taste in music.

16. They hate it when you choose the music on the radio.

But hey, they hate our taste in music just as much, so it all works out!

17. There’s a constant argument as to how late is “too late.”

We like to stay up late; they don’t. And so the battle continues.

18. Alcohol.

Drinking at home is never a good idea. Just don’t do it. Or hide it better than you do.

19. Your vocabulary consists of one word.

Nope. Just nope. Did we do the dishes? Did we ever leave the couch today? Do we want to do anything? Nope. Nope. Nope.

20. But by the end of the summer, most of your bad habits have been broken, just in time for school to start again.

And just like that, we’ve finally gotten used to being home and we’ve got to turn right back around and head out to school. Figures.

So while it may be difficult transitioning from school life to home life, make the most of it now, because in a few months, you’re going to miss it like no other.
