Tailgate Season (AKA Fashion Season)

By Amanda Cohen on October 4, 2015

As the country excitedly dives into the much anticipated college football season, college students prepare for the long weekends of tailgating and deciding which outfits they should deck themselves out in for the next home game.

Even though Americans’ love for football is mostly centered around the statistics and records of each player, many students find themselves being more concerned about what outfit they should sport in their next Instagram post.

Here are five tips in creating the perfect game day outfit.

Cheerleading Outfits

Cheerleading outfits are no longer saved solely for the actual cheerleaders and dancers on the field. When you walk into that 9 a.m. tailgate you won’t be surprised if you see girls rocking their school colors, school name, or sorority letters on a cheerleading skirt.

T-Shirt Dresses

T-shirt dresses are the perfect outfit for someone who is looking to wear something both stylish and comfortable.

Now, when you go shopping, don’t ask the store manager where the t-shirt dresses are. Instead, just go to the men’s clothing section, find a cool tank top or football jersey that bleeds school pride, and buy it in a large or extra-large. (Note: it is important to wear spandex underneath the t-shirt dress so that you can dance without fear of being exposed).

“Bedazzling”

When I say bedazzling, I am not talking about the bedazzle machine that reigned in popularity in the ’90s. Bedazzling is the “umbrella” term for face jewelry/tattoos, beads, and shiny hairpieces.

Accessories sometimes make more of a statement than your outfit; so don’t be afraid to go all out! Break out your Lollapalooza eye jewels and sticker your school logo on the corner of your eye to complete your perfect game day outfit.

Fanny Packs

Raise your hand if you have ever lost or broken your phone at a tailgate … I know the majority of people have their hands raised.

Why does this happen to so many people? Most people don’t want to have to carry a purse on their shoulder while they are trying to dance and scream school cheers with their friends. These two magic words will fix all of your problems … fanny packs.

Fanny packs no longer provoke the image of a black waistband pack that moms would wear on power walks. Fanny packs now come in all sorts of colors and patterns, and even some can say your school or sorority’s name on them!

Overalls

Last, but certainly not least, are overalls. Overalls are cute, fun, and comfortable. You can sport denim overalls with a shirt underneath that has your school colors, or you can wear those crazy fun striped overalls that many people buy at their school stores!

Leave one side unbuttoned, both sides unbuttoned, or both sides buttoned; you can truly take this outfit in so many directions.

Game days are the best days, and they are even better when everyone goes all out with their school spirit and dresses to the nines.
