The Girl's Room: An Unexpected Love Affair

By Katherine Gardner on June 24, 2016

If I have learned anything from my last two years in college (in a non-academic setting) it’s the sacredness of the girl’s bathroom when you’re out on the town with friends. The girl’s room is a safe haven in a sea of frat boys, spilt drinks, and loud music. It’s a place to take drunken selfies with no pressure to impress because you’re only among girlfriends. It’s a private area to take a quick time out and ask the serious questions: how is everyone feeling, are there any cute boys to keep tabs on, when do we plan on leaving, etc. After having observed numerous bathrooms during my time here in Tallahassee, I have compiled a list of the various types that you will surely encounter in your college lifetime, each of which equipped with its own unique personality:

The House Party Bathroom – the most personal bathroom on the list and in my opinion the best bathroom to occupy with your girl squad when you’re getting tipsy. This bathroom tends to be quiet and rarely has a line, meaning that everyone is free to take silly selfies, reassess their makeup situation, chug the rest of their mixed drink, and assess the departure time of the group without feeling rushed or pressured to hurry up for the next person in line. Another huge plus of the house party bathroom is that the toilet paper is always stocked and quality soap is usually provided for the guests. What more can you ask for in a bathroom?

The Frat Party Bathroom – the most disgusting of all bathrooms in tipsy girl history. Upon entering this bathroom with your girlfriends you can expect to be greeted by a line of fellow girls notifying you that there is no longer any toilet paper in either of the stalls and the second stall is clogged (the second stall is always clogged). Once your group finally makes it to the front of the line and squeezes into the (fingers crossed) working stall and Stephanie has confirmed that she came prepared and brought a pack of tissues with her, everything proceeds smoothly. You all make it out alive, but do not plan on going to the bathroom again that night.

The Club Bathroom – where girl camaraderie truly comes into play. No place other than the bathrooms of nightclubs and bars have I witnessed so much genuine girl-to-girl compassion and support. Whether it be taking each other’s picture, fixing a button on a shirt, holding the door of a broken stall closed, giving someone a pep talk if their feeling down – all amongst strangers – girls always seem to be there for one another in this setting. No matter who you are, what sorority you are or are not in, how you’re dressed, not matter what, everyone is always looking out for one another.

Sometimes girls get a bad rap when it comes to getting along with one another, but if you have ever witnessed the compassion and the understanding that takes place in a girl’s restroom, your faith in the kindness of women is sure to be quickly restored. This is a place where friendships are made, selfies are taken, heart-to-hearts are had, and compassion is never ending. If I ever find myself in need of a helping hand or shoulder to cry on, I can only hope to be treated with the same kindness and concern that I have seen take place in the girl’s room.
