Strange British Men in the Livingroom, and other Bad Roomate Experiences.

By Alexandra Thompson on January 10, 2013

Let’s talk about roommates: that’s right, roommates.  As a college senior, I’ve had four years of roommates that gives me quite a bit of experience with the ups and downs of roommate-lore and legend.  Thankfully, I’ve been lucky with my roommates and I’ve managed to have four years of very good or livable roommates.  I like to consider myself a person who gets along with most anyone, but that didn’t save me from having a few lovely experiences for myself.

When I first got my roommate assignment freshmen year I freaked out a little bit.  I had no idea who this person was and was tentative to mail them first.  I had heard terrible stories from my father about his roommate in college who disappeared for days and never said where he went.  I was recently showed the Collegehumor video about the six types of roommates that you will have in college and, looking back, I was terrified that I’d get some sort of drug addict, alcoholic or dumb bimbo who didn’t know George Washington from George Foreman.

But she wasn’t like that at all, thank goodness.  The worst roommate experience I had from my freshman year was keys.  Keys and locked doors were drama all over the place.  Someone would forget their key in their room and their roommate would disappear for hours, abducted by aliens, fallen off a cliff or slipped into the twilight zone until 2am.  Especially on that night before you’re really early morning class, key drama would happen.

However, the key drama was light compared to the worst roommate experience I ever had.  It happened when I was over in England and the worst part about it was I didn’t even realize it had happened until after the fact.  It was a lazy Saturday morning, I woke up early like I always did and walked into the living room to check what was on the “telly” to find three strange men sleeping in our living room.  Apparently some of my flat-mates had decided that bringing home friends from the bar was okay and letting them sleep over was okay.  They didn’t factor in that I was the only one on that same floor and they were all safe upstairs.  I had no idea if these guys were killer people that were going to smother me in my sleep or something like that.

Thankfully that didn’t happen, but when the other flat-mates found out there was quite a discussion that went down about bringing strange British men into our household. That’s my worst roommate experience: if you have one that you would like to share and be featured in a bi-weekly blurb, “Roommates from Hell”, email me at alex.thompson31@gmail.com.
