Job Description
Would you like a food service job that is weekdays only? No weekends or nights? Our Assistant Cook position may be just the right fit for you!

The individual who fills this position will assist the Cook with kitchen tasks as needed. Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) assisting the Cook to prepare and serve meals and snacks in accordance with the State and USDA requirements and guidelines, and which aligns with New Dream’s quality of food standards, efficiently shopping and purchasing items for food while prioritizing good time management, positive collaboration with management and staff members, and a willingness to participate in on-going trainings.

The importance of the kitchen staff can not be emphasized enough, as they interact with everyone in the facility while delivering meals to the classrooms. An upbeat demeanor is a requirement; and if you are bi-lingual in Spanish, that's even better!

The Assistant Cook is expected to be knowledgeable in kitchen procedures, and will be trained in proper portions for children’s food, and all center and kitchen policies. All staff members are expected to dress and behave professionally while on duty.

The Assistant Cook is responsible for assisting the Cook to keep the kitchen in strict compliance with state and USDA code at all times, and to report any kitchen mishaps to the Center Director.
The Assistant Cook will work directly with The Cook and teaching staff on allergies and food preferences (vegetarian options and substitutions) for enrolled children, maintaining supportive and positive relationships with parents and other staff, and promoting the mission of the Center.

In addition, the Assistant Cook will receive training and guidance from The Cook and Center Management in all aspects of that position, including cross-training.

Individuals who smoke cigarettes may not come to work with the odor of tobacco on their clothing or breath. Staff are not permitted to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol at any time while on or using, New Dream property.

Mandatory Requirements and Safety Trainings of the position include:
• Current enrollment in the Oregon Criminal History Registry (prior to start of employment)
• Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety online course (within 30 days of employment)
• Current Oregon Food Handler’s Card (within 30 days of employment)
• Current Pediatric First Aid/CPR Certification (within 90 days of employment)
• Oregon’s Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect online course (within 90 days of employment)
