10 Items To Put On Your Summer Bucket List

By Elana Goodwin on July 5, 2016

When you’re finishing spring semester, summer seems like this amazing, lengthy vacation during which you’ll have time to do everything you’ve wanted to do during the school year but didn’t have time for and more.

However, summer is flying by, and soon enough, you’ll be back at school, wondering where the time went. Making a bucket list might be a helpful way to truly get the most out of your summer — and here are 10 items to put on your list to start you off.

1. Spend the Night Under the Stars. Whether you’re outdoorsy or not, this is one item that should definitely be on your summer bucket list. Grab some friends and go camping or throw a camp-in in your backyard and tell ghost stories, eat junk food, star gaze, and catch fireflies (just be sure to let them go!).

2. Go On a Road Trip. Summer is the time to travel — no matter your budget. A road trip is the perfect way to go somewhere new without breaking the bank. You can choose someplace nearby that’d be a good day trip or drive somewhere further if you can afford more gas and are able to spend the night in either a motel, hotel, or campground.

3. Organize Your Room. While not necessarily such a fun bucket list item (unless you’re a neat freak), summer is a good time to organize and clean your room — especially if you’re home for the summer. Old papers from high school, clothes you don’t wear or that don’t fit anymore, other random stuff and knick knacks can be given away or thrown out.

If you’re staying in your apartment or house near college for the summer, there’s probably still things you want to clean — try to sell old textbooks so they’re not laying around anymore, throw out papers and handouts you don’t need, and you can purge your closet, too, so there’s more room in there for next year.

4. Make a Bonfire. Nothing says summer like making s’mores over a bonfire. Invite some friends over and make a bonfire in your backyard or head out to a beach and make one there.

5. Throw a BBQ. There’s nothing like the smell of charcoal to make you think of summer. Get your family together or some friends and have a barbecue with burgers, corn, potatoes, shish kabobs, etc.

6. Have Some Water Fun. Summer is hot and the easiest way to get cool and have fun is with some water! Break out the water guns or water balloons and have a water war with your siblings or friends, put on the sprinklers and run through them, or get out the slip-and-slide. For bigger-scale water fun, head to the pool, lake, or beach and proceed with the festivities.

7. Get an Adrenaline Rush. If you’re not an adrenaline junkie, step out of your comfort zone and do something that gets your blood pumping. There are a number of cool and thrilling activities you can put on your summer bucket list, like skydiving, going on roller coasters, hot air ballooning, off-roading, paint balling, rock climbing, jet skiing and more.

8. Attend Free Events. There’s nothing better than free stuff — especially to a college student. Luckily, summer is filled with free stuff, from art fairs to outdoor concerts to parks and more. Look into what free events are happening in your area this summer; you never know what awesome things you might be able to do for free!

9. Hang with Friends. If you’re home for the summer, reach out to old high school friends who are also back in town and make plans to hang out and catch up. If you stayed by school for the summer and didn’t return to your hometown, see what college friends are around and available to do stuff with and then get together and relax.

10. Be Tech-Free for a Day. I know it seems impossible, but it may be beneficial and a cool “throwback” thing to do. By going tech-free, you’ll be forced to live purely in the moment, doing whatever you’re doing that day. No more worrying about capturing the perfect selfie and posting your thoughts and actions on social media for all to see. Instead, you’ll have to be present and simply enjoy whatever you’re doing without being able to document it. If you really want to be daring, try going tech-free for a week or for the duration of whatever summer traveling you do.

Already have a bucket list? Consider making one just for summer with more seasonal activities on it so you’ll be able to check more stuff off! And if you’re not sure what to put on your summer bucket list, use the above 10 items to help you get started.
