4 Thanksgiving Main Dishes Every Student Can Make

By Samantha Alsina on November 21, 2016

You may have realized that Thanksgiving is a lot closer than you anticipated and if you’re like me, you may not have thought about what you’ll be cooking on the biggest “food” day of the year.

Depending on your cooking level, you may also be feeling the pressure to cook up something new or exciting for your friends, guests, or family! Lucky for you, I’ve listed four foods that are easy to make and easily devour-able that all cooking levels can accomplish.

All you need for most Thanksgiving dishes is a good amount of herbs or spices, lots of vegetables, and eggs! It helps to have olive oil, all-purpose flour and whole milk too for most dishes.

  1. Roasted Vegetables

This is a classic Thanksgiving side dish. All you need is a foil covered platter and a nice amount of vegetables. After preheating your oven to 400 degrees, place the diced vegetables of your choice onto the platter. Feel free to mix it up with brussel sprouts, green beans, asparagus, russet potatoes or red potatoes, sweet potatoes, or even butternut squash. You may even place some onion, thyme, or whole garlic cloves for a little more flavour. With a little drizzle of olive oil and some salt or pepper, you’re ready to pop that platter in the oven and let it cook for about 20 minutes. A lot of seasoning may be necessary depending on the amount of vegetables you’re cooking. Here’s one recipe.

  1. Vegetable Quiche

By getting a frozen pie crust first, this recipe may be easier and less time consuming for you on a busy Thanksgiving. You definitely want a good amount of grated cheese and eggs. More vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers (of your choice), diced onions, mushrooms, and garlic salt are great additions to a quiche. A dash of parsley at the end is nice touch of flavour. You initially want to sauté your vegetables and crack your eggs in another bowl. In the same bowl, add your grated cheese and some milk. After coating your vegetables with oil and letting it cool, you can add it to your bowl of cheese and eggs. Once you finish this, you can easily place it into your lightly floured pie crust and add a dash of herbs or seasoning onto the top.

  1. Green Beans With Almonds & Thyme

Easy to eat, easy to do. What’s not to love about simplicity especially in regards to cooking? For this recipe, you can use either fresh or frozen green beans, herb or seasoning of your choice, and some nuts for a nice fall crunch! Add your green beans to a boiling pot of salted water. After five minutes or so, drain the pot. Placing your green beans into a separate bowl of cold water will brighten the color of your green beans! Who doesn’t like pretty food on Thanksgiving? Letting it rest there, prepare a skillet with oil, garlic salt, thyme, or whatever you’d like to sauté your green beans with! After heating your green beans like this for a couple of minutes, you may put the beans onto a nice serving bowl and garnish with nuts!

  1. Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Forget the somber box mixes! For this classic Thanksgiving food, you want it to be more than sub par–you want it to be excellent! Mashed potatoes can easily be made from scratch if you know the right things to add. You need plenty of russet potatoes (4lbs about or 8 good sized potatoes), a whole head of garlic, about 2 cups of milk, and some butter for a nice creamy taste. With this recipe, you start by peeling all the potatoes, all the garlic cloves then boiling them together till the potatoes are soft. After draining them, add the potatoes and garlic in a large-enough saucepan. Let them dry under the heat and in another saucepan, boil the milk. You want to pour the boiling milk over the potatoes and garlic. With a little butter and salt, it’s ready for the mash part. You may use a potato masher till the desired texture. If you don’t have one, you can easily use anything that will have the same effect as smashing potatoes until flat.
