Swimwear Trends of Summer 2017

By Amanda Cohen on May 23, 2017

The sun is shining. The humidity is causing your hair to frizz. The bees continue to sting your arms. The redness from one day in the sun causes your skin to peel. Ah yes, it’s summertime!

Despite the allergies and the humidity, summer is the most amazing time of the year because you get to bask in the sun and show off your bikini body (no matter your shape, size, height, etc. you all have bikini bodies … NEVER let anyone tell you differently)!

However, deciding what to wear to show off your fantastic figure can be difficult because (1) there are so many different options, (2) there are different types of swimwear for different occasions, and (3) the swimwear trends keep on changing month to month, and even sometimes week to week!

Well, have no fear because Amanda is here and, what many of you do not know, is that I love to shop for swimwear … even though my swimsuit drawer is currently overflowing and my mom keeps telling me to organize it ~oops~. Read on if you want to know the 2017 summer swimwear trends!

One-Pieces (AKA the Monokini)

One-pieces are no longer for infants, toddlers, and middle school kids to wear on the beach; they are now all the rage for young adults and older adults alike! However, designers have come a long way in the creation of these beautiful pieces of swimwear because they come in so many different styles, materials, colors, and patterns.

My personal favorite is the cut-out one-piece. The cut-out (or cut-outs if there are multiple) can be anywhere — on the sides, in the stomach, on the back, etc. Even though they create some atypical tan lines, they are totally worth it because they are comfortable and ensure that your outfit is photo-ready whenever the moment may strike you.

Crochet one-pieces are also fun and are great for the days where you are just laying outside and not swimming because, in my opinion, the crocheted material can be uncomfortable when it’s soaking wet.

High-Neckline Bathing Suits

Even though these bathing suits also create some ~abstract~ tan-lines, they are super stylish and allow you to tan your stomach, which in my opinion is very important. Like the monokini, these bathing suits come in various fabrics, patterns, styles, colors, etc. Many of these bathing suits are cut out in the chest area or have crisscross strings in the middle of the bathing suit top.

My personal favorite high-neckline bathing suits are the Indah ones (these can be found on Revolve, ShopBop, etc.). One quick tip for these bathing suits is that they tend to run smaller in the bottoms and bigger in the tops, so just be aware when you are choosing sizes! For girls who are a little chestier, these bathing suits are perfect because they give the chest much more support than a regular triangle bikini!

Sarong

I used to have a bunch of ~fun and flirty~ sarongs when I was younger, but then they went out of style. Well, guess what … they’re back and cooler than ever! I would say that I should have kept the sarongs from my childhood, but let’s be real, they definitely would not fit me now.

Sarongs are a nice alternative to denim shorts because they are light-weight, airy, and not constrictive. They are easy to pack for beach vacations because they take up no space and they come in all different colors, patterns, and fabrics. Sarongs can be worn with any type of bathing suit and the entire look will look more complete if you add in a floppy hat.

When pairing sarongs with a patterned swimsuit, make sure you get a solid color one that does not clash with the color of the bathing suit (for example, do not wear a hot pink swimsuit and a bright orange sarong).

Floppy Hats and Fedoras

Floppy hats and fedoras are not only meant to wear to the Kentucky Derby. Like I stated earlier, a good hat can really complete your summer look, while also protecting your beautiful faces from the damaging UV sun rays. You can take a sassy and sophisticated picture for Instagram if you look to the side while tipping your big hat and wearing your sarong with a beverage in your hand.

You could get a cloth hat, a straw hat, a more solid-material fedora hat, and more! I recommend buying a hat that has a neutral color like navy blue, white, tan, black, brown, and so on. Also, do not be afraid to buy a big, dramatic hat … it adds to the fun and it adds to its protector qualities for your faces! Go big or go home, am I right?

I hope all of your summers are filled with good food, good people, fun adventures, and some down time from the hectic school year. Enjoy the beautiful weather and don’t forget to get your tan on in the above outfits!
