The Excellence in Innovation Award is awarded every two years, and the distinction recognizes a singular college or university for the fulfillment in discovering important substantive answers to better the lives of others and to create systematic extensive change in response to local, regional, national, or global challenges. The college who receives the Excellence in Innovation Award will be given $100,000 in tangible recognition of its exemplary strides in response to the changes and obstacles higher education institutions face in the world today. The Excellence in Innovation Award was established in 2014.

“The Phi Kappa Phi Excellence in Innovation Award is a fitting extension of our mission to recognize and promote excellence in higher education by lifting up the transformative work being done on college and university campuses across the country,” said Phi Kappa Phi Executive Director Dr. Mary Todd.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 and is the country’s oldest and most discerning collegiate honor society for all academic majors. Each year, it inducts roughly 30,000 students, faculty, and other professional staff, and there are chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.

Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and grad students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have accomplished scholarly distinction also qualify for membership. The Society’s mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.”

The Society has given out fellowships and grants to Phi Kappa Phi members and students on its chapter campus since 1932. Today, more than $700,000 is awarded every year through programs that in the past year, have acknowledged over 285 individuals. The Excellence in Innovation Award was initially awarded in 2016 to Tulane University and is the Society’s only award for collegiate establishments.

The application period for colleges and universities to apply for the Excellence in Innovation Award is open until December 12, 2017. To be eligible, the institution must be a regionally accredited baccalaureate or higher degree-granting four-year college or university in the United States (or located outside the U.S. that has an active chapter of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi). Only one submission per college allowed and the submission must include the signatures of the university president/chancellor and provost/chief academic officer.
