College shopping time! Mini fridge? Check. Important documents? Check. Bed risers? Check. Coffee machine? Check. Bathroom supplies? Um …

When you’re starting to shop for your college supplies, you DEFINITELY want to make sure you bring all of the right things for your college bathroom. It’s more than likely the first time you will be living on your own, far away from home, and when it comes to “adulting,” you definitely want to start on the right foot.

Once you step into the store though, you might be overwhelmed by the wide stock of back-to-school items available. How will you know what you really need for your college bathroom? Well, that’s what we’re here for today.

Keep reading to figure out everything you will need for your college bathroom!

Basics

Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. When it comes to furnishing your college bathroom, there are some things that you simply cannot live without. For instance, college bathrooms typically don’t come with their own shower curtains. It’s up to you to come up with “luxuries” like that all on your own, or with the help of your roommates.

You will also need to bring your basic bathing needs: towels, washcloths, loofahs, etc. Whatever you need to feel squeaky clean! Also, be sure to bring a shower mat, a rug, or some sort of soft surface to keep you from slipping on those cold tile floors every time you step out of the shower. Don’t forget toilet paper!

Remember to bring cleaning supplies. Specifically, stock up on sponges, shower cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner, drain cleaner, surface cleaning wipes, rubber gloves, a toilet brush, a toilet plunger, and glass cleaner. Some college students are lucky enough to have a maintenance staff come to their rooms every so often to clean, but others aren’t so lucky. As terrible as bathroom cleaning is, it’s all part of becoming self-reliant. Who knows, maybe you’ll learn how to enjoy scrubbing out a soap-stained bathroom in time for midterms!

If you live in a space with a communal bathroom, you’re lucky because none of this applies to you. All you need to bring are your basic toiletries and necessary medications. However, communal bathrooms aren’t necessarily the most hygienic. With that being said, invest in a pair of shower shoes. You’ll need them to keep your feet from picking up disgusting mold or germs from everyone else. Also, bring a shower caddy. This little wonder will make it a lot easier to bring your shower toiletries from your room to the bathroom.

Toiletries

Now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, here are some of the things you need, not to take care of your bathroom, but to take care of you.

First, let’s talk teeth. Bring a toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes or firm-bristle toothbrushes are definitely the way to go for clean teeth and healthy gums. Also, not to sound like your dentist, bring dental floss. Your teeth will fly straight down into the nasty zone if you miss a huge chunk of food after you brush. Also, make sure to bring mouthwash for that minty clean feeling.

Also, bring soap. Lots and lots of soap. You will be surprised at how quickly you can run out of soap over the course of a semester. Bring body soap, facial soap, and all the things you need to take care of your skin (exfoliator, lotion, etc.)

If you need things to get you through “that time of the month,” be sure to stock up on pads, tampons, and panty liners. Try to have enough to last you until Thanksgiving break.

If you wear makeup, bring all of the necessities you need to look and feel great, but don’t forget to purchase makeup remover. It can come in liquid or wipes. You’ll need it after a night out. Other supplies include shaving razors, cotton balls, q-tips, hair supplies, nail clippers, pumice stone, and nail files.

Medications

Let’s get one thing straight. No matter how hard you try, no matter how many vitamins you take, and no matter how many times you wash your hands, it’s inevitable: you will get sick in college. It’s a fact and you must accept it. It stinks, but it pays to be prepared no matter what. Stock up your shelves with all of the top-notch TLC you can find. Bring allergy medications for whenever you’re around your neighbor’s cat or when the seasons decide to play a cruel trick on you.

Bring a fully stocked first aid kit. You’ll never know when you actually might need it. Bring everything you need to take care of a common cold or flu: cough syrup, throat spray, nasal decongestant, and cough drops. Bring remedies for an aching stomach or bathroom issues, like Pepto Bismol, Tums, Immodium, and stool softener.

Living off of a different diet than what you’re used to can definitely affect your body, so make sure you have all the right supplements to take care of yourself if things go south. Also, remember to stock up on birth control and protective barriers, like condoms, dental dams, birth control medications, female condoms, etc. Stock up on everything you need to if you decide to become intimate with someone else.

Speaking of medications, make sure to have enough bottles or refills of prescribed medications to last you for the entire semester. Take care of yourself and everything else will follow and fall into line.

With all of these things, you and your bathroom will have an excellent start to your college semester!
