Many people foreign to the world of online classes assume that the academics and learning are far easier than traditional style classes, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth! When taking online classes, there is so much more to consider than when being in a regular classroom, such as access to more distractions, adjusting to virtual learning, managing time properly, and most importantly, having a proper place to work. If you don’t have a place to work when taking classes online, projects, tests, essays, etc. can be nearly impossible to do- leaving you trying to scramble and save your grade from potentially failing.

Though there is no changing your learning habits, you can change your perspective on learning by simply changing the location of where you learn! Sometimes you might prefer to learn in a library, under the harsh fluorescent lights during late hours. Other days you may like to switch it up and take your learning outside of the physical school building and elsewhere, which can make you wonder, “what are the best places to work for my online classes?”

If you’re a student taking classes online and looking for some of the best areas to work, be sure to take note of these recommendations!

1. Coffee shop: This may be totally basic, but a coffee shop is certainly a great place to work on classwork outside of the standard school library or a dorm room. Coffee shops are known to have great atmospheres, with light and calming music, dim light, and plenty of tables and seating (pick your favorite, squishy sofa chair or firm stool chair). Coffee shops can also be a great place to work or study because it’s a public space, which can not only make you comfortable and motivated, but it can also be a great excuse to grab a delicious cappuccino!

2. Outside in a park/On-campus: If you are not much of an outdoor person, then this option may not be the best for you. But if you love the outdoors or even just occasionally like it from time to time, working on your online classwork in a park or on locations outside on campus is a great way to boost your motivation and increase the success of your learning!

In fact, according to Healthline.com, exposure to sunlight has many benefits including, “reducing stress, boosting focus, and inducing calmness.” You can work or study anywhere outside and go about it any way you want. Perhaps you want to sit on the ground with a blanket and study that way, or maybe you want to sit on a bench overlooking campus — whichever way works best for you is totally in your control!

3. In an apartment/dorm: Though this is perhaps the least unconventional place to study, an apartment/dorm is not the worst place to do so! Plenty of people are not comfortable with public spaces, so why not make it simple and work online in your dorm/apartment?

Furthermore, most dorm buildings and apartment complexes have common areas, so even if you are still in the building where you live, you can still get out of your dorm/apartment and have a positive work or study experience in a common area.

4. Off-campus public library: Libraries can get a bad rap as being places that are boring and dull, but they’re great places to work, learn, and study. Public libraries for students serve as a great opportunity to not only travel outside the comfort of campus but also as a great resource for any information you may want while you are working. Libraries have plenty of tables, seating, lighting, and books to make the best of your time there. Despite what others may argue, go ahead and be a bookworm! It will be to your benefit!

5. Your Parent’s Home: Let’s be real, who is a better motivator to get work done than our own parents? Parents have that perfect edge that encourages you to put forth your best effort and gives you just enough pressure to do so. Working on your online classwork or studying at your parent’s home can give you both comfort and drive to meet those deadlines on time!

Taking online classes is no walk in the park- it requires just as much drive, perseverance, sweat and tears that traditional style classes do. There is more to be aware of, such as distractions, time management, and having an adequate space to get work done in a timely and productive manner. Whether you want to bask in the sunshine while learning statistics or listen to Bon Iver in Starbucks while tackling Shakespeare, you have the world at your feet and a multitude of options when it comes to working online and creating the best place to do so. As always, good luck!
